2017 exam result celebrations for Millfield Upper Sixth pupils

Upper Sixth pupils were today celebrating their exam results for A level, Pre-U and BTEC.

Across all 38 courses, pupils achieved a 99% pass rate with 30% receiving A* to A grades or equivalent, and 47 pupils securing three or more A grades, or equivalent UCAS points in their top three subjects.

Our Top 100 pupils achieved 93% A* to B grades or equivalent, and attained 100% A* to B grades in 15 A level subjects (Accounting, Art, Chemistry, Chinese, Computer Science, German, Greek, Home Economics, ICT, Media Studies, Music, Photography, Physical Education, Religious Studies and World Development). Other subjects where our Top 100 pupils performed well include Economics (97% A* to B) and English Literature (96% A* to B).

In BTEC, 78% of results were Distinction or above, equivalent to an A grade at A level. BTEC Business achieved 82% Distinction or above, BTEC Sport saw 76% Distinction or above and BTEC Art & Design secured 73% Distinction or above. BTEC Sport in particular saw 47% of entrants achieving the highest grade possible, equivalent to 2 A*s at A level.

Exceptional individual achievements include former Head Boy Alexander Dawkins, who received 3 A*s in Economics, French, Mathematics and an A in Philosophy. He has also received a Distinction in his Violin ABRSM Diploma, which is equivalent to a first year at a music conservatoire, as well as completing his Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. Alexander will study French and Philosophy at King’s College, London.

Amygrace Berger will take up her place at St Hilda’s College, University of Oxford to read Chemistry after achieving A*s in Chemistry and Mathematics, A in Physics and a D in Further Mathematics.

Former Head Boy, Robbie Brown, will also take up a place at University of Oxford, joining Worcester College to study Psychology and Philosophy. A talented cross-country runner and pianist, Robbie ran for Somerset in the Cross Country Nationals and received his Associate Recital Diploma in Piano from Trinity College London.  Robbie achieved an A* in Mathematics and 3 As in Further Mathematics, Greek and Latin.

Maria Canon Henao and Alexandra Symonds-Willmott both secured D* D* D*, the highest mark possible, in BTEC Art & Design and will now take up their places at Parsons School of Design in New York and the University of the Arts London.

Caitlin Edgar achieved three A*s in Biology, Mathematics and Physics. A talented athlete, Caitlin was invited to Phase 2 of the Team GB #DiscoverYour Gold cycling trial. Caitlin will read Biomedical Engineering at Imperial College, London.

Beatrice Svensson was awarded three A*s in Business Studies, Psychology and Spanish as well as a B in the EPQ (Extended Project Qualification). Beatrice will take up her place at King’s College, London in the autumn to study Spanish and Management.

William Gabb secured two A*s in Computer Science and Economics and two As in Mathematics and Physics. William is an accomplished dinghy sailor and is Captain of the school sailing team. He will now read Economics at the University of Bath.

Eleanor Abercromby achieved two A*s in Mathematics and Latin, an A in Greek and B in Music. Eleanor will study Classics at the University of Exeter.

Isabelle Weir was awarded two A*s in Art & Design and Greek, and an A in Latin. A Senior Prefect, cellist, singer and art scholar, Isabelle will now take a gap year.

Joshua Wright achieved an A* in Economics, an A in Mathematics and a D2 (A* equivalent) in Pre-U History. A Rugby 1st XV and Sevens player, Joshua is also a member of the Bristol Rugby Club Academy. He will take up his place at Durham University to study Philosophy, Politics and Economics.

Former Head Boy, Charlie Howard, achieved two A*s in English Literature and Physical Education and an A in Drama and Theatre Studies. A talented actor and rugby player, Charlie is a member of the National Youth Theatre and was Captain of the 1st XV rugby team. He joins the University of Exeter in the autumn to study Drama.

This year’s Upper Sixth will now move on to a broad array of opportunities across the world, emphasising the diverse fields our pupils pursue.”

Other high achievers in their top three subjects include Gregor Abercromby, Emily Bayliss, Emma Bedford, Nick Brookes, Tamsin Campbell, Daniel Charman, Mingcong Chen, Kate Chistyakova, Alastair Crossley, Wayne Ellam, Aeron Evans, James Gillie, Evie Gubb, Clara Husbands, Cosima Keen, Dylan Kramer, Chavanan Leelavichitchai, Emily Li, Amelia Lunnon, Indi Morland, Ella McNulty, Millie Nielsen, Jasmine Olds, Immy Parsons, Marcus Price, Mimi Rhys, Sam Rouwenhorst, Chris Smith, Lounes Soualah, Annabel Stanford, Beth Wigney, Benji Wrigley, Brendan Yee, James Yuen and Lavrenty Zakharov.

Millfield’s reputation for supporting pupils to secure places at prestigious US universities continues with thirty-four pupils receiving offers this year. To date, in addition to Maria Canon Henao, other recipients include Nick Brookes (Northwestern University), Emma Cain (University of California, Los Angeles), Joel Leon Benitez (Virginia Tech) and Luke Hammond (Oklahoma State University).
