Millfield School – Hazards expert talks to Sixth Form geographers

20 Feb 2017

Professor Iain Stewart from Plymouth University joined Sixth Form geographers to talk about how we as humans make decisions that determine the likelihood and impact of a hazard.

One of the world’s experts in this field, Professor Stewart explained that where we choose to live and build turns natural hazards into disasters and that there is a complex pattern of decisions and stochastic forces that entwine to increase the size of vulnerable populations. Improving technology and prediction may help but listening to local people and finding simple appropriate solutions that are easily achieved is also very important.

The depth of the talk and clarity of delivery helped improve the understanding of a complex issue for all those that attended.

We were delighted to be joined by pupils from other schools including Wells Cathedral, King’s Bruton, Sexey’s, Sherborne and Wellington.
