Sibford School – Students Learn About Self-Esteem

21 Jul 2016

Former children’s mental health tsar, Natasha Devon MBE, visited Sibford School near Banbury as part of the school’s first ever Year 11 into Year 12 Induction programme.

Natasha, who recovered from an eating disorder in 2006, is a member of the Self Esteem Team, an organisation dedicated to challenging stereotypes, reducing mental health stigma and educating young people (as well as their teachers and parents) on self-esteem.

She spoke about the challenges teenagers face in media depictions of body images and how this can impact on self-esteem.

The talk was part of a two-day programme offering students a taste of sixth form life.

Head of Sibford Sixth Form, Cate Mallalieu-Needle said: “Our Sixth Form students enjoy regular visits from outside speakers and it was great that Natasha was able to join us for this induction programme. Her talk was very thought provoking and the students described it as ‘amazingly helpful and informative’.

“This is the first year that we have offered a Year 11 into Year 12 Induction Programme for prospective students. Our current Year 12s took a lead role in welcoming the students to the Sixth Form and organised a range of team building activities. Students were also able to attend lessons in their chosen subjects, giving them the opportunity to find out more about the courses they intend to study as well as meeting the teachers and begin to become familiar with other students. We all look forward to September and welcoming these students fully to Sibford Sixth Form.”
