General Information

We believe in academic excellence for all with a clear emphasis on enjoyment and enthusiasm in the classroom, underpinned by first-class pastoral care. Under our guidance, pupils are nurtured yet challenged, acquiring both the knowledge and skills that will not only prepare them for life here but also for the next stage of their education and the wider world.

Every school day is action packed with lessons including daily music and French from the age of 3. Weekly enrichment lessons are part of the curriculum, with Textiles and Cookery, Design and Technology and ICT. In Lower School boys begin to play rugby, hockey and cricket and girls hockey, netball and rounders. At play time pupils are free to run around or play on the fort, which has its own cargo net and mini climbing wall!

In Upper School, there is, of course, a natural increase in the level of work required from the children as they embark on the two-year Common Entrance Syllabus; other pupils begin work in Year 8 on scholarship syllabuses.

The Chapel building is magnificent. Chapel provides pupils with a firm foundation on which to build their lives and teaches them the value of justice, peace, love, compassion, forgiveness and integrity - things which are central to the Christian way of life.

Cheltenham Prep School has a true ‘Sport for All’ ethos. Children of all ages and abilities will play a part in a team. We have an impressive range of coaching staff including sports professionals as well as qualified, trained and experienced teachers. Pupils are offered opportunities to attend sports trips and tours which range from local day trips to residential tours. The girls’ Hockey tour to Holland and the boys’ Rugby tour to Barcelona have become a major highlight in the sporting calendar.

Our spacious and well-tended grounds offer many rugby pitches and Cricket squares. The main Sports Hall (8 courts) provides an outstanding facility for organised indoor sports and is the central point for most lessons. It also houses a 6 lane, 25-metre indoor swimming pool. We have 2 full size astro turfs, 4 hard tennis/netball courts, 6 squash courts and a fitness suite.

We run a number of Clubs and Activities off-site, such as Polo, Equestrian Club, Skiing and Shooting. The remainder all happen here at school, and range from Cooking Club to Forest School, from Archery to Italian Club, from Ukelele Club to Bible Explorers, from Fencing to Urban Street Dance, from Circus Skills through to Model Boating Club (trying them out on the Lake!) and our own Scout troop.

Year 5 Prep pupils enjoyed their annual experience day at Cheltenham College, as part of a programme of events which introduce the wide variety of

activities that make up life at the senior school. In the morning everyone took part in a round robin of CCF and leadership activities, run mostly by College students. The activities were followed by an fantastic opportunity to ask the students themselves all about what it is like to be a senior school pupil. After lunch in the College’s grand Dining Hall, the Year 5’s had taster lessons in German, Spanish, Textiles and Resistant Materials. Everyone gave wonderful feedback, saying they’d had a very enjoyable day and that it gave them a great glimpse of the opportunities available at College. Here’s what some of the Year 5 pupils thought of the day:

“I loved the challenge of climbing over the wall in CCF. At first I could not do it, but then my friends helped me and it made me realise about the importance of teamwork and sticking at something.” – Mia

“I liked using the sewing machines because it was something new and also we made a drawstring bag to take home..” – Noah

“All the teachers were really nice and friendly. They made us feel welcome.” – Zara

“Going through the tunnel in CCF was scary as I get claustrophobic. But once I did it I felt a great sense of achievement. I’m glad I challenged myself.” – Kate

Year 1 children experienced a truly traditional day at the seaside in Weston-super-Mare whilst consolidating their topic work with a talk about the seaside, past

and present. The children were fascinated to learn about a bathing machine, which people in the past used to change and enter the water. They had the opportunity to dress up in beach clothing similar to what they would have worn in the past, and discovered that the attire included hats and long dresses!

For lunch, everyone devoured delicious fish and chips on the Grand Pier and followed this with a yummy ice cream on the beach! The boys and girls tested their engineering skills by building sandcastles in abundance whilst enjoying the warm sunshine and had fun playing games.
