    Facilities

Clifton College is a traditional English boarding school that highly values the international dimension and the cosmopolitan atmosphere brought to the school by its overseas boarders and Summer Language School students. During term-time, the school teaches over 1,300 pupils (20% from overseas). Pupils who do not speak English as their first language are given full support and EAL lessons are available. In the summer there are up to 430 residential students at any one time, from more than 15 different countries. The Summer Language School runs for six weeks in July and August, and is open to students aged 13-17 for 2, 3, or 4 week stays. We also have a large number of students arriving in groups from their own countries and staying with us.

The impressive Chapel is one of the jewels in the Clifton College crown, and has been the spiritual centre of school life since it was first opened in 1867. The Percival Library is a beautiful Grade II listed building, home to more than 15,000 books and a computer suite. The College also has a dedicated scientific library, Stone Library which houses approximately 5,000 scientific books and journals, situated on the ground floor of the Science School. Sixth Formers enjoy the freedom of their own Sixth Form Centre and Junior Common Room.

Specialised buildings such as the Joseph Cooper Music School, with fully-equipped recording studio, and the Redgrave Theatre ensure our pupils have access to first-class facilities that enhance their educational experience. We have outstanding sporting facilities, including the 90-acre Beggar’s Bush, Bristol’s largest outdoor sports complex. The development of a new state-of the-art sports complex at Beggar’s Bush, ‘The Chellaram Sports Complex’, will house an eight court hall for netball, tennis, basketball and badminton amongst other sports, as well as extensive hospitality and catering facilities, and is set to be completed for the 2024 school year.

All pupils are strongly encouraged to participate fully in the wide-range of available activities. Whether in the CCF, D of E, or Clifton in the Community; playing water polo or rowing; attending society meetings; or acting, singing or performing in a music ensemble. The range of opportunities is such that every pupil can find their niche and develop interests and talents beyond the purely academic.

Both full and flexi boarding options are available and provided a true home away from home. There are seven boarding Houses in the Upper School, including four Boys’ Houses and three Girls’ Houses. Each House is home to 55-80 pupils during term-time.
