General Information

HawleyHurst is an independent, co-educational school for ages 2 to 19. We aim to educate students to become responsible citizens, respect their surroundings and tread lightly on the Earth. We aim for children to become successful independent learners, and gain pleasure from their environment whilst contributing to the school and wider community as well as promoting personal growth and development thus achieving personal goals and broadening their life chances and enriching their quality of life.

The Nursery School is divided into two large, brightly decorated classrooms and is set in its own enclosed garden, providing a natural, safe and secure play area with logs, play house and outdoor play equipment comprising a colourful pirate ship with slide and rock wall ramp, an all-weather carpeted play area and a covered outdoor activities area. The children also have the use of the three halls and the Prep School computer suite with networked computers and the Prep Library. The adjoining playing fields and tennis courts provide additional play areas and the grounds and neighbouring woods are excellent for nature walks. In the Prep School class teachers deliver most of the curriculum, whilst specialist teachers teach French, PE, Computing, Music and Drama.

A balanced programme for PE and Games is offered to include athletics, cross-country, football, netball, basketball, judo, rugby, cricket, rounders, tennis, hockey, swimming, gymnastics and dance. We hold traditional sports days, swimming galas and cross-country events . There are regular fixtures against other schools in the main team sports and pupils can also opt for PE as a GCSE subject. Our Art Room provides facilities for drawing and painting, clay work, ceramics, collage and printing. Pupils are able to participate in the many Choirs, an Orchestra, African drumming, Flute Choir, the Guitar and Recorder Ensembles and various musical productions. Visiting music teachers offer individual tuition in all the main instruments. As well as timetabled drama lessons and an after-school club, we stage a major annual production and regularly participate in drama festivals. Many pupils enter for LAMDA awards and we achieve regular success in public speaking competitions.

Because of the individual attention we can offer, students who are particularly able can be given extra challenges, while those with special needs are given support both within normal classes and on a one-to-one basis.

The school offers a wide range of extra- curricular clubs and activities. There are also regular outings to museums, study centres, concerts, theatres and places of educational interest. Pupils in Year 4, 5 and 6 go to PGL locations for their residential educational experiences. Such trips involve memorable team building exercises, geography field work, computer work and some challenging physical activities, such as climbing and abseiling. Senior trips include a very popular annual ski trip to the French Alps, science trips to Florida or Iceland, regular STEM trips, a biannual World War 1 Battlefields trip and trips to our twin towns – Meudon in France and Oberusel in Germany.

Early Morning, After School Care and After School Prep are available.
