General Information

We are an independent secondary school in London with a strong Christian ethos.

Parents care deeply about their child’s education and so do we. We go out of our way to recruit excellent teachers with a passion for their subject many of whom are professionals in their field. At Thames each individual is known and valued and this, combined with small well-behaved classes, enables our teachers to develop each pupil’s talents and inspire them to achieve. Our teachers build trust and open communication with pupils and their parents. This relationship between parent and teacher is highly valued.

Our pupils attain top grades across a wide range of subjects and have no difficulty in obtaining places at the sixth forms of their choice including highly competitive independent and grammar schools. In 2017 our GCSE results were significantly above the national average. 87% of our pupils achieved at least one A*/A (9-7) grade, 53% achieved at least two A*/A (9-7) grades and 40% at least three A*/As (9-7) grades.

We are concerned with all aspects of our pupils’ lives: their behaviour; whether they show the right attitudes; how they respect others and relate to their friends; their achievements, not just academically, but also in the creative arts, sport and technology. At Thames we help teenagers make responsible choices and become well-rounded individuals with the integrity and depth of character they need to prepare them for life in today’s world.

Whether your child enjoys science, humanities, languages or the arts, we offer choices to suit them. GCSE options include separate sciences, computer science, music, graphics, drama and PE. This is coupled with a vibrant programme of co-curricular activities, competitions and trips including our award winning trip to Africa.

Our pupils continue to achieve excellent GCSE results, considerably out-performing the national average. The percentage of A*/A (9-7) grades attained in 2017 was 32% and A*-C (9-4) 78%, significantly above the national average.

ISI quotes March 2015

“Behaviour is excellent and pupils feel safe, secure, valued and well supported.”

“Performance across the subject range at GCSE is markedly higher than that predicted from their prior attainment – said ISI report

“Almost all pupils achieve places at their first choice of schools or colleges for post-16 education, some achieving scholarships at highly competitive independent schools.”

Facilities

Thames has always been at the forefront of technology and, as a Google Reference Site, is used by Google and its partners to demonstrate new technology and train teachers.

At Thames we value languages and believe they are important to education in the modern world. We teach Spanish and French to GCSE and offer Mandarin and Italian in an after-school setting. We also teach Latin and our most able linguists have the opportunity to continue Latin to GCSE as an extra-curricular option. We prepare bilingual pupils for GCSE in their second language in Year 8, 9 or 10, depending on their readiness in the written language. We also accommodate other language interests such as Russian and Polish.

Our Creative Arts curriculum includes the Visual Arts, Performing Arts, Music, Design Technology and Textiles and pupils are able to participate in instrumental ensembles, choir, band, drama, printing, life drawing, prop making and woodwork.

Many of our pupils aspire to study sciences at A level and beyond and may take one, two or three separate IGCSEs in Biology, Chemistry and/or Physics, with the majority taking two or three of these sciences. We believe that every child has the potential to be a great mathematician. We make provision in the form of after school clubs, training for the UKMT Maths Challenge and Puzzle of the Week. Our Able, Gifted and Talented Year 10 and Year 11 pupils are currently attending fortnightly Maths master classes at Kings College School of Mathematics.

Like many London schools, Thames uses external facilities. Close by are excellent outdoor and indoor sports facilities including: outdoor grass football pitches; an outdoor Astroturf pitch; two large, fully equipped sports halls; a fitness suite and a dance studio with a sprung floor. Pupils who study Physical Education at GCSE can choose to be assessed on sports as varied as table-tennis, dance, trampolining and even horse riding or skiing. On leaving Thames, some pupils have gone on to specialist sports academies and four have joined professional football clubs. Pupils have the opportunity to take part in other sports such as squash, rugby, golf, table tennis, badminton, swimming, tennis, self-defence and dance as extra-curricular activities. On activity camps and trips, pupils may sample less mainstream sports such as climbing, abseiling and bowling.

Thames Christian College is a mainstream school with recognised provision for some pupils with mild to moderate learning difficulties such as dyslexia, dyspraxia or dyscalculia. We recognise that these pupils can be extremely gifted. The excellent quality of our learning support is recognised by CReSTeD, the Council for the Registration of Schools Teaching Dyslexic Pupils. If your child has Special Educational Needs you can discuss your child's needs with the SENCO when viewing the school, either at an open morning or by appointment with the Registrar.

Entrance Requirements

Prospectus and application form are available from the Registrar. For Year 7 (11+), applications should be received by 19th November of the year before entrance is required. Late applications may be considered if there is space in the class.

We will invite your child to sit an entrance assessment in order to assess their academic potential. Whilst we accept pupils with varying levels of ability, many are academically gifted. Some are talented artistically, creatively or in sport. Others have potential yet to be realised. Whichever is the case, the nurturing environment, personal attention and partnership with you as parents enables your children to achieve more than they may have thought possible. Our excellent track record demonstrates this, with pupils achieving between one and three grades higher across all subjects than their standard prediction tests indicate. References will be sought by us from previously attended schools. Finally, and of particular importance, you and your child will be invited to an enrolment interview to check that Thames is the best fit school for your child.

Late entries may be considered depending on space. We welcome applications from pupils about to start their GCSEs or those who have completed Year 10 who wish to repeat Year 10 in order to attain higher grades. For all applicants to the school in Year 7 or above we arrange taster days. This enables your child to try out the school to ensure that it is the right one and to determine that the move will be successful.

Scholarships

Up to five scholarships are available annually for pupils joining Year 7. These awards are made without regard to parental income and are worth up to 20% of the fees. The categories are: Academic; Art; Music; Performing Arts and Sport.

A small number of partial bursaries may be available each year. Please contact the school for details.

Our pupils have been producing some amazing pieces of artwork this term that have gained recognition outside school. Margot, Year 9, has had her copy of Albrecht

Dürer’s Praying Hands accepted by idea magazine. Her sensitively drawn image will appear in the May/June issue to illustrate different expressions of creativity and how art can be inspired by faith. Four of our pupils, Jed, Alex, Margot and Kale, exhibited at the Aspire2inspire Dyslexia Art Exhibition during half term, an event illustrating the connection between dyslexia and creativity.

Our Year 8s have produced some striking drawings as well as clay tiles in the manner of Georgia O’Keeffe and Year 9 have produced some expressive self portraits in charcoal. You can enjoy some of these artworks on our social media pages: Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. Here is a drawing of an eye, Georgia O’Keeffe style, created by Georgia in Year 8.
