Hull Collegiate School attends special awards event at Houses of Parliament

15 Jun 2018

On Tuesday 5th June, representatives from Hull Collegiate School attended a special event at the Houses of Parliament to celebrate being shortlisted for a TES Award.

The school has been shortlisted for the coveted TES International School Award for its successful Safi Coffee project which seeks to support children in Uganda by selling Ugandan coffee beans across the UK. Every penny of profit pays for the children to attend school.

Representing Hull Collegiate School, Chris Wainman, Deputy Head and Carrie Mertens, External Relations Officer, joined the other shortlisted schools and their local MPs for afternoon tea at the Houses of Parliament.

Hosted by Lucy Powell MP and TES Editor Ann Mroz, the pre-ceremony event was a chance for the shortlisted schools to celebrate their achievements and talk to MPs about their work.

Chris Wainman, Deputy Head of Hull Collegiate School, said:

“We were humbled and honoured to represent Hull Collegiate School and Safi Coffee on behalf of our pupils and the communities in the UK and Uganda.  As a school that seeks to deliver an Education with Character, we encourage our pupils to be ambitious and give them the confidence that they can achieve anything they set their minds to.  Our Safi Coffee project is a true example of our pupils’ determination to bring about change and make a real difference to children’s lives in Uganda.  Being shortlisted validates the importance and success of this project and is already inspiring our younger pupils to do something they aspire to.  Today was fantastic and now we can’t wait for the Awards Ceremony itself!”

The winners of the 10th TES Awards will be announced in a special ceremony on Friday 22 June in central London.
