Leighton Park School – A Level DT Students Show Off Dazzling Skills

27 May 2016

Incredible hand crafted tables are now being displayed in the Old School Reception area. The tables weren’t designed and created by professionals, but actually by a group of talented and hard working AS Design and Technology students!

Each student has created a stunning and completely individual coffee table, which will reside in Old School for some time before being taken home by lucky members of staff and students. The tables represent over six months of hard work and learning by our talented young designers and manufacturers.

The project briefs for the tables were carefully constructed to challenge the students and maximise the amount of DT processes used, “Students designed on CAD software, learned how to laser cut and engrave acrylic and experienced creating an acrylic mould” said Mark Smith, Design and Technology teacher.  They also gained experience in drilling and tapping a thread, lamination, form-bending and turning down brass on a lathe. The project was split into separate design and manufacturing tasks, with the design elements led by the students, who were encouraged to think like professional designers when approaching the project.

“I wanted to carve pictures on the inside too so that you can still the sunshine when you are lying on the floor.” said Lower Sixth student, Vlada Evtushenko.

”The students who enjoy this subject tend to learn by doing,” says Mark “rather than by reading a book.” Design and Technology continues to grow in popularity and scope at Leighton Park, with the number of students choosing it as an option doubling from last year.
