Christ College – ‘WAR LIST WW1’ RELEASED BY THE CHRIST COLLEGE ARCHIVE

25 Sep 2014

ON THE CENTENARY OF THE LAST SPEECH DAY BEFORE THE OUTBREAK OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR CHRIST COLLEGE ARCHIVE HAS RELEASED WAR LIST WW1. COLLATED FROM CHRIST COLLEGE RECORDS, THE LIST WILL BE AN INVALUABLE SOURCE OF REFERENCE FOR FURTHER RESEARCH AS WELL AS A COMMEMORATION OF THOSE WHO SERVED IN THE FIRST WORLD WAR.

At the unveiling of the Memorial Cross in Chapel Yard in 1922 it was said that 447 Old Breconians served their country between 1914 and 1918. By collating details published in The Breconian, it has been possible to assemble a list of 447 Old Breconians known to have served.
Although we will never know whether we have found the same names referred to in 1922, it is our hope that War List WW1 will become a new source of reference. And, as we commemorate the First World War, we hope that the list will also be a memorial to the 447 – or more – Old Breconians whose lives were changed forever by the experience of war.
447 names – 447 stories
War List WW1 is just one of a series of opportunities for research and discovery that aims to understand 1914-1918 through the experiences of Old Breconians and their families. Christ College would very much like to add the stories of as many Old Breconians as possible. Contact is welcomed from researchers who would like to share their knowledge of the service and war experiences of any of the Old Breconians listed, or any other Old Breconians known to have served. There is no doubt that there are others whose service details never reached the school.

If you have family details or research that you would like to contribute to War List WW1, please contact Felicity Kilpatrick, Christ College Archivist: archive@christcollegebrecon.com
