‘FLASH! BANG! WALLOP! CARDIFF UNIVERSITY SCIENTISTS SET TO INSPIRE CHRIST COLLEGE PUPILS

06 Mar 2014

TODAY, PUPILS IN FORMS 1 TO 5 AT CHRIST COLLEGE ARE SET TO RECEIVE A CHEMISTRY MASTERCLASS FROM SCIENTISTS AT CARDIFF UNIVERSITY’S SCHOOL OF CHEMISTRY.

On 12th February we will be welcoming Professor Peter Edwards and Mr Peter Hollamby from Cardiff University to give their ‘Flash, Bang, Wallop’ demonstrations in Y Neuadd Goffa: The Memorial Hall.

Head of Chemistry at Christ College, Dr. Paul Smith, said: “This is an exciting demonstration of experiments with flames, explosions, fireworks, colours, firing plastic bottles across the room etc, and is sure to delight and inspire all of the Forms 1-5 pupils in attendance.”

Dr. Smith added: “The performance is being put on by by the Cardiff University School of Chemistry. The show will uncover some of the secrets of nature and chemical reactions – especially those of a spectacular kind!”

The show has been described as an exciting event that illustrates the magic of Chemistry and blows the lid of its dusty image. Chemistry is a fascinating subject and although the emphasis in the chemistry show will be on showcasing spectacular reactions which involve, heat, light (colour) and sound, the underlying theme, delivered in an entertaining way, explores what drives chemical reactions and how understanding chemical reactions is crucial if we are to successfully tackle some of the key problems faced by modern society.
