In the coming weeks, TASIS will produce a series of blogs that will illustrate our approach to well-being, its inherent link to the past and present culture of the School, and why such an approach has and will allow our community to prevail and to continue to grow and develop

This week’s post Flourishing in the face of adversity is in our DNA is written by Jason Tait, Director of Pastoral Care and Designated Safeguarding Lead, TASIS England

Mrs. Fleming expected that everyone in the TASIS family should and would be stretched to challenge themselves and to make the most of the abilities that they have but may not be not aware of (Mary Crist Fleming, 1979).

In essence, this expectation is at the heart of well-being and is the catalyst that will allow us the opportunity to live a life where we feel good and fulfilled. This is written into the DNA of our School and is one of the foundations of TASIS.

Flourishing in the face of adversity is in our DNA

At TASIS, our purpose is to challenge students to reach their full potential.

We seek to provide students, teachers, and all members of the community with the opportunity to develop the life-long skills and habits required to experience a fulfilling life.

How do we achieve it?

Know Yourself:
Knowing who we are will help us be the best version of ourselves. We flourish in the face of challenge and opportunity when we have both the knowledge of our own strengths and when we develop the resilience to cope with challenges.

Be Yourself:
TASIS believes in the worth of each individual member of our community and their potential to make a positive difference in the world. To fulfill this potential, we teach our students to skillfully respond to the present, striving to grow through effort. We also teach them to have the courage to make mistakes and learn from them. In this environment, all members of the community can flourish.

In the coming weeks, TASIS will produce a series of blogs that will illustrate our approach to well-being, its inherent link to the past and present culture of the School, and why such an approach has and will allow our community to prevail and to continue to grow and develop. These blogs will center around six pathways:

Positive Emotion:
Being able to focus on positive emotions is more than just smiling, it is the ability to be optimistic and view the past, present, and future from a positive perspective. When someone enjoys the tasks in their lives they are more likely to persevere and battle challenges through creative and alternative solutions.

Engagement:
Engagement in the activities in our lives is important for us to learn, grow, and nurture our personal happiness.

Relationships:
Building positive relationships with our parents, siblings, peers, and friends is important to spread love and joy. Having strong relationships gives you support in difficult times.

Meaning:
Having a purpose and meaning as to why each of us is on this earth is important to living a life of happiness and fulfillment. Such meaning gives people a reason for their life and the perception that there is a greater purpose in life.

Accomplishments:
Having realistic goals and ambition in life can help us to achieve things that can give us a sense of accomplishment. Having accomplishments in life is important as we continue to push ourselves to thrive and flourish.
