Homefield Children Laying the Seeds for Centenary Wood

20 Jan 2017

To mark the Centenary of the First World War and honour the brave souls who fell for our future, The Woodland Trust is planting a new Centenary Wood on the edge of Epsom Downs and a number of Homefield boys have been at the centre of the project.

On December 17th, a willing band of Homefield cubs helped out at one of the planting days. On the day, an impressive 7,000 trees were planted by volunteers at the wood and the Homefield boys contributed more than 100 of those.

The project team are aiming to plant over 200,000 native tress in total, including beech, rowan, hawthorn and oak, as well as creating carpets of striking wildflowers. Ten thousand trees have already been planted on the site in Langley Vale, which, with its rich diversity of life, has been designated a Site of Nature Conservation Importance (SNCI).

An impressive £4.5m has already been raised to support the project but another £4.5m is required to finish it. If you would like to find out more about this worthwhile cause and donate, please visit https://www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/support-us/support-an-appeal/centenary-woods/england/.
