General Information

Cumnor House School has 2 sites. The girls’ school is found in Woodcote Lane, Purley, CR8 3HB and the boys’ school in Pampisford Road, South Croydon. There is a coeducational nursery on both sites.

Located on a leafy residential road in South Croydon, our school has been likened to a Tardis, as there is so much more than meets the eye. On the outside the school looks like 3 large houses linked together, while on the inside the facilities include numerous age appropriate classrooms, science labs, a DT room, a Music School, Library, assembly hall, dining hall, three playgrounds, a swimming pool, and offices. The Nursery has learning through play activity stations, an onsite kitchen and super outdoor learning areas. The children really do have a home from home environment in which to develop and learn.

A short walk up Pampisford Road we have an excellent 10 acre sports facility. Here the boys play football, rugby, cricket, athletics and a range of minor games. On this site there will be a new Sports Pavilion built in July 2017.

We expose all our children to the widest range possible of extra-curricular activities in order to nurture their sometimes hidden talents and bring out numerous positive characteristics which contribute to their overall success. Cumnor House is renowned for its sporting, music and drama opportunities and the successes it brings in terms of individual and team accolades. There is an impressive list of accomplishments across sporting tournaments, musical competitions, chess competitions and more.

There is an on-going investment programme to maintain and improve the fabric and flow of our school facilities. While significant renovations were carried out during the summer of 2016, there are still further major works planned for the summer of 2017.

Steadman, is delighted to announce that they have been awarded the grade of “Excellent” across the board.  This is the highest grade a school can be awarded under the ISI Inspection scheme.

“We are all delighted with this report and it gives the whole school community a sense of pride,” said Mr Steadman, who joined as Headmaster in September 2016.  The report highlights the “substantial success” of the pupils in “achieving scholarships and places at senior schools of choice”.  It also remarks on the “considerable success in sporting and music events.”  As two of Cumnor’s Alumni are Elliot Daly and Chris Robshaw, who are part of the current England Rugby squad, it is a school of strong sporting heritage.  The school provides up to 200 sports fixtures in any one term across age groups including regular overseas tours in cricket.

Mr Steadman, a former Saracens Rugby captain himself, has told parents “I am delighted to see that there are many references to the excellence of Cumnor’s provision and achievements by the pupils throughout the report.”

It’s certainly not all about Rugby at Cumnor House.  The report makes reference to the “teachers’ typically high expectations” enabling pupils to make “good progress in well-informed lessons”.  It goes on, “The pupils develop excellent communication skills, and are extremely confident and competent speakers.  Their moral development is outstanding and their behaviour is almost always exemplary, meeting the school’s aim to encourage gentlemanliness.”

The embedding of the school’s own code of conduct “The Cumnor Way” is referred to in the report several times, which promotes the boys’ excellent belief in themselves and positive determination to succeed, whilst also displaying “excellent awareness of and sensitivity towards the needs of others”.  This all supports the key summary finding in the report that “The quality of the pupil’s academic and other achievements is excellent”.
