General Information

Perrott Hill is a thriving country preparatory school situated in beautiful grounds upon the Somerset-Dorset border. The phrase ‘time and space for a full education’ is at the very heart of all that happens at the school and we provide a unique family atmosphere in which all children can develop a sense of self belief and confidence. Against a background of traditional values, every single child is encouraged to achieve their very best, be it in the classroom, on the games field or throughout the wide variety of activities we have to offer.

Perrott Hill combines extremely high standards of academic and pastoral care. In addition to day places, we offer full, weekly and flexi-boarding and, with a wide range of evening and weekend activities on offer.

The Independent Schools Inspectorate Report, October 2013 was outstanding with Perrott Hill achieving the top mark of ‘Excellent’ in each and every category. The 108 children leaving Perrott Hill in the last 4 years have secured 78 awards in disciplines as diverse as Academic, Music, Choral, Drama, Art, Sport, Equine and All-Rounder.

Games take place every afternoon, the majority of our children play a musical instrument and both Art and Drama are enormously popular throughout the school. Every bit as importantly, pupils are given great personal care to develop and thrive as individuals before they step on to life at their next school.

The Montessori Nursery and Pre-Prep are housed within the converted stable courtyard next to the main school buildings, which gives the younger children their own safe, secure environment whilst allowing them to take advantage of the grounds and facilities of the Prep School.

Since 2009 Alex has been the Headmaster of Polwhele House, a small and highly-regarded prep school near Truro. He is a graduate of Durham University, where he read music. After post-graduate teacher training he rose rapidly to become a primary school deputy head at 27. In 2005 he moved to the independent sector, becoming Academic Director at Foremarke Hall (Repton Prep School).

London on 17 March. The school was chosen from entries that involved over 2,250 children from all over the world including UAE, Kenya and Hong Kong.

“The entry from Perrott Hill School was simply amazing,” says Jo Elphick, education manager for the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation (DSWF) that has been running the annual competition since 2004. “The collaboration, imagination and creativity that they, and their teachers displayed in putting together their tiger focussed entry was truly inspirational.”

Pupils at Perrott Hill spent time finding out about wild tigers and fundraising to support DSWF’s TigerTime campaign.

“As we are fundraising for tigers we chose to find out more about them for our entry,” explains Perrot Hill teacher Tabatha Palmer. “Our Year 7 pupils researched, sketched and wrote about tigers. As we found out more, this inspired us to create sculptures, engravings and also create models in art lessons. In English the children really enjoyed researching and creating fact sheets together and writing poems and speeches.”

Wildlife artist and founder of DSWF, David Shepherd CBE, who attended the prize giving event added: “The sheer imagination and skill involved in the Perrott Hill entry and presentation was quite outstanding. The work was beautifully crafted and the presentation was powerful and thought provoking.”

“The children had an amazing day and are really proud and delighted to have come third,” adds Tabatha Palmer. “They loved the opportunity to meet David Shepherd and to see all the exceptional artwork that had been entered.”

The Global Canvas Art and Poetry competition is part of the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation’s Art for Survival programme. Established in 2004 it aims to encourage young people to express their concern for the environment and, in particular, endangered species with which we share our fragile planet. This year’s event was sponsored by Marks & Spencer and Michael O’Mara Books with support from Little Tiger Press. The guest speaker was children’s illustrator and author, Jonny Lambert.
