Millfield – ‘Johnson Sessions’ showcases contemporary music talent
17 Aug 2016
Millfield Music launched a newly-styled intimate concert series this term called the ’Johnson Sessions’, styled on the popular ‘Later with Jools Holland’ format. The first gig was enjoyed by 130 pupils, parents and staff.
The Music department aim to open up the opportunity to perform outside of the traditional classical concerts and recitals and to bring contemporary music into the heart of the department whilst providing a platform for songwriters to perform their own songs. These gigs are now planned to take place once a term as a dedicated showcase featuring a huge range of contemporary music styles.
Hosted in the Johnson Hall Foyer, the first concert included sets from 20 pupils in a range of styles featuring numbers by Ed Sheeran, Wolfmother, Bonnie Tyler and Coldplay. Budding singer-songwriters Oscar Zaky and Woody Taylor performed their own songs alongside our resident rock band ‘Imperius’ who gave their usual energetic and high octane performance. It was also great to discover much new talent with some pupils performing for the first time in a Music Department event; Roa Al Shidi was one of many who stunned with her debut performance of Ella Henderson’s ‘Missed’.
