Mimi Webb returns to Kent College for Speech Day

Former Kent College, Canterbury student Mimi Webb returned to the school on Friday 8th July to take part in the annual Speech Day.

Mimi has often credited her music teachers at Kent College with discovering her talent and encouraging her to consider pursuing a career in music. ‘’It was my piano teacher at secondary school, Kent College. In my first lesson, he asked me what I could play and I said, “Oh, I can play Someone Like You by Adele and I can sing it, too.” He was probably thinking, “Hang on, this is a piano lesson” but when I sang, he just was blown away. He then called up the guitar teacher, who came and listened too, and they basically got my mum on the school phone and told her, “This is something you need to pursue”. I was so excited!’’

Mimi released her debut single “Before I Go” in April 2020 which was featured on TikTok gathering over 85 million views and has over 25 million streams on Spotify. Mimi continues her meteoric rise to pop stardom with 2 Top 10 UK Hits with ‘’Good Without’’ and ‘’House on Fire’’ and a live performance at the Platinum Party at the Palace to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Mimi joined Speech Day as a special guest of Mr Mark Turnbull, the Head of Kent College, on stage during the ceremony and spoke of her determination to write songs despite her struggle with dyslexia. Mimi also took part in a Q&A session with students, providing inspiring answers to their questions including describing a typical day in the life of a pop star and what advice she would give her younger self.

Speech Day 2022 was a reflection on the College’s deep-rooted family values, yet demonstrated the full breadth of education and opportunity provided to all students at Kent College. Over 60 prizes were awarded to students in recognition of their determination and effort throughout the academic year. We also celebrated our IB students, who achieved a 100% pass rate in the diploma with 40% of the cohort achieving over 40 points, while 5 also gained bilingual diplomas. Head of School, Justus, and Laura were awarded the maximum 45 points joining the top 1% of candidates in the world.
