PUPILS SET TO CONTINUE CHRIST COLLEGE’S EXCELLENT OXBRIDGE TRADITION

04 Mar 2014

THREE CHRIST COLLEGE PUPILS ARE CONTINUING THE SCHOOL’S EXCELLENT OXBRIDGE TRADITION HAVING JUST RECEIVED OFFERS FROM OXFORD AND CAMBRIDGE.

Three Christ College pupils have succeeded in winning offers from Oxford and Cambridge universities, all to study Engineering.

Hugh Perkins from Cowbridge has an offer from Gonville & Caius College, Cambridge whilst Kyle Wang from Shanghai and Lewis Murray from Pembrokeshire have gained conditional offers from Oxford at Worcester and Keble Colleges respectively.

Senior Academic Tutor, Neil Blackburn, commented: ‘This is a wonderful achievement by these three young men given that competition for an Oxbridge place is so fierce; around six applicants per place in Engineering from a strong and international field. These students have already gained top academic qualifications to support their applications, but then so have all Oxbridge candidates. They all attended Headstart/Smallpeice Trust university residential courses last summer and these have been beneficial not just in supporting their applications, but also in generating a strong interest and enthusiasm for Engineering as a career. We are very proud of their success, exciting times lie ahead for them.’

Head of Christ College, Emma Taylor, said: ‘The fact that all three successful candidates this year are studying Maths and Science supports the view that learning alongside other bright and motivated pupils is one of the keys to individual ambition and success; all three of these candidates have been actively involved in academic groups which aim to stretch and challenge pupils beyond their A level studies and competition with other highly able maths and science pupils has sharpened and focused their efforts further. Oxford and Cambridge entrance relies heavily on interview, and these three pupils, like many of our Sixth Form, are particularly articulate and able to express themselves persuasively and fluently as well as produce excellent solutions on paper.’

Christ College will be holding Entrance & Scholarship Assessments for prospective Year 7 and Year 9 pupils interested in joining the school in September 2014. The assessment dates are Friday 7th February and Saturday 8th February. For details please contact Admissions Registrar Mrs Margaret Stephens on 01874 615440.
