St Clare’s, Porthcawl – Prize Day at The Grand Pavilion

11 Nov 2015

St Clare’s School, Porthcawl has revived the tradition of rewarding its young achievers with an Annual Prize Day Ceremony. Boys and girls from the Prep School right up to Sixth Form received prizes for academic excellence and sporting achievements.

Porthcawl’s famous Grand Pavilion provided a perfect stage to celebrate the achievements of the past year and reinforce ambitions for the coming year.

This year St Clare’s School welcomed the Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayoress of Porthcawl as Guests of Honour, with Geoff Howell as Guest Speaker. Geoff, 67, a retired Aerospace Engineer who worked on the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) more commonly known as the “Star Wars” project in the 1980s, is also a Chair of Governors for several schools in Bristol with an excellent reputation for championing the education of pupils. He visited the school in the morning and described his life’s work in a Physics Masterclass for the pupils and presented the prizes in the afternoon. Addressing a full house at The Grand Pavilion, he shared some of his favourite motivational quotes with the audience, “Education is what remains after you have forgotten everything you learned in school”, “Live the life you imagine” and “Set your course by the stars, not by the lights of every passing ship”.

Headmaster Simon Antwis commented: “St Clare’s Prize Day is a chance to celebrate the achievements of our pupils and to showcase some of their talents. It’s also a chance to reflect on a significant year in the history of the school and of course an opportunity to meet and talk with each other.“
