Bromsgrove School Awarded CyberFirst Gold Status
Cyber Security skills are increasingly important for young people’s future, and at Bromsgrove School we are keen to ensure that we are meeting the evolving demands of the 21st century. As such, we are delighted to report that we have been recognised by the National Cyber Security Centre’s CyberFirst Schools Recognition Scheme as a CyberFirst – GOLD school.
The goal of the CyberFirst Schools Recognition Scheme is to recognise, promote and support best practice in schools delivering computer science and cyber security related education.
Head of Computer Science at Bromsgrove School, Fran Round said “We have large number of students studying for Cyber EPQ qualifications and taking Computer Science at GCSE, IB and A level. The key to Bromsgrove’s success is the effort we put into making our curriculum interesting and relevant. As a leading school in the UK for Computing, STEM and Educational Technology, this process has given us valuable opportunities to involve the whole school and look at digital skills, Computing and STEM education across all areas and to engage with a wide range of industry partners and really make these subjects vibrant and exciting.”
Bromsgrove offers a very wide extra-curricular programme which means that learning at Bromsgrove School does not stop when lessons finish. There are an extensive range of computer science based activities that take place during after-school and weekend activities such as CyberFirst girls, coding clubs, robotics and e-sports, and the high level of engagement with a range of external agencies really adds value.
“CyberFirst Schools is a superb initiative. I know that we deliver an excellent STEM curriculum that enables our pupils to achieve at the highest standard and Computer Science is a thriving subject at Bromsgrove School. Provision here is a key area of interest for many of our parents, and one of our school’s unique selling points,” explained the Headmaster, Michael Punt. “A high-quality computing education is vital for the next generation – being a “CyberFirst School – GOLD” has allowed us to gain vital external validation of our ambitions in this area for all our students.”
Bromsgrove School was awarded the highest level of recognition in part due to its extensive work supporting other schools, and offers regular opportunities for teachers to network, learn and share best practice. On July 2nd, 2025, it is hosting the “Festival of Computing”, http://www.festivalofcomputing.com, an event bringing together over 250 secondary computing educators from across the country and beyond, the largest such event in the UK. Johnny Palmer, Computing Hub Lead said “For many years now we have been working with and supporting schools across the UK to review and extend their Computing provision, and I would strongly encourage others to engage with the CyberFirst Schools Recognition Scheme to help them on this important journey. As a first step, schools should visit https://www.ncsc.gov.uk/cyberfirst/cyberfirst-schools to find out more.”
