Fencing Success For Bromsgrove Prep School Pupil

Congratulations to Grace Warren from Bromsgrove Preparatory School who on Sunday 21st May competed in the Hereford & Worcester County Championships’ weekend in Redditch where she won the U12 Girls’ Epee event.

Grace became the West Midlands Champion at the West Midlands Epee qualifiers held at Packwood Haugh on 29th January 2017. She also qualified for the British Youth Championships in Sheffield held at the EIS on 29th April 2017. This is the second time Grace has qualified for the British Youth Championships, she also competed in 2016.

Grace has been fencing since Year 5, where she joined the after-school fencing club held at Bromsgrove School. This is run by Nick Chapman of Bromsgrove Swords. She only fences once week, which is very little time compared to most of the fencers she competes against in the county competitions and certainly at the British Youth Finals. Due to her previously competing in the West Midlands Triathlon and Tetrathlon events (run by Pentathlon GB) where she has also won trophies – she has always preferred to do Epee rather than Foil.

Grace sees this sport as her hobby and enjoys her sessions with Nick and she enjoys the excitement of the competitions. She has met some lovely people when competing in events in the Midlands and she enjoyed being part of the West Midlands team along with 3 other girls representing the region in Sheffield this year.

A number of Bromsgrove School’s fencers also travelled to the Hereford & Worcester County Championships’ weekend event, held at Trinity High School in Redditch. On Saturday 20th May, Sam Sung won the U14 Boys’ foil and remained undefeated all day, and Tatiana Morikova finished 3rd in the U16 Girls’ foil. On Sunday 21st May, Elsa won 4 out of 5 fights in her pool and went on to win the under 14 girls Epee.

Mark Cheng took on the adults in the Senior County Championships. He won his first elimination fight and finished 8th overall.
