Greenfields School and Dyslexia

07 May 2017

According to the Oxford Dictionary, Dyslexia means;

“A general term for disorders that involve difficulty in learning to read or interpret words, letters, and other symbols, but that do not affect general intelligence.”

According to Greenfields it means a student who has trouble with reading or other learning disabilities but does not know how to overcome them.

Here are some comments from Greenfields graduates – some of whom had been told they had  ‘learning difficulties’ before coming to the school:

“Before Greenfields, a doctor said I was dyslexic and possibly ADHD. I had a reading age of 8 when I was 11 years old. I found Greenfields and decided I wanted to go there…

I started to like going to school and had the highest reading age in the class at 16+ this was when I was 13 years old. I have also proved to my parents that I am far from dyslexic or ADHD.”

“Before I arrived at Greenfields I had been labelled ‘dyslexic’, which caused me to think that I could not do too well in my exams, so why bother? But when I walked into Greenfields, it was different. No one saw me as dyslexic. Rather, they saw that I could do well. Getting me to realise that took a little bit longer.

My time here at Greenfields has taught me to believe in my own abilities and not to listen when someone says that I cannot do something. My increasing success academically boosted my confidence and that increase in confidence in turn helped me to do better academically. I just got better and better!“

“Greenfields helps people to help themselves. No child is deemed stupid or backward or dyslexic at Greenfields, or less than perfectly capable of understanding and applying what they have learnt if put at the right level and given the right tools. This is more than a technique – it is a whole attitude towards learning.”

“When I was ten I went to an optician because I had extremely uncomfortable headaches and my eyes hurt when I studied. They said it was because of my dyslexia, and for the next two years I wore glasses. When I came to Greenfields and began to use Study Technology* I did not have to use glasses.”

* Study Technology is used by Greenfields School and teaches students how to learn. The focus is on the student actually being able to learn any subject and to be able to apply what he has learnt. For more information: www.appliedscholastics.org/study-tech.html
