Homefield Musicians Hit the High Notes

Homefield’s musicians have been very busy of late, starring at both the St John’s Orchestral Day and the Epsom College String Day.

On Thursday 28th January, a large contingent of 22 Homefield boys took their place alongside children from thirteen other schools to form a 150 strong orchestra, playing every conceivable orchestral instrument except the bass tuba. As in previous years, Homefield supplied the largest number of students from a single school, all of whom are at least grade two on their chosen instrument. Following a busy afternoon of rehearsals, the orchestra put on a wonderful display for their parents at 7pm. There was a varied programme of music for the large audience to enjoy, including Two Renaissance Dances, Chariots of Fire, I Dreamed a Dream and Can You Feel the Love Tonight. All in all it was a hugely successful day for the Homefield boys – the concert went superbly and, despite some unsurprisingly sore lips and tired arms, the boys had a fantastic day.

The annual Epsom College String Day took place on Tuesday 2nd February. As with the orchestral event only five days earlier, Homefield took a large group of twenty-one boys, which included boys from Years 3-6. The less experienced players were provided with music for just open strings whilst the older and more experienced instrumentalists played some more challenging violin parts. The sizeable 150 strong string orchestra rehearsed all day and at 4pm the Homefield pupils, along with children from 18 other prep schools, delivered five pieces for their parents. Every piece was played flawlessly with Chitty, Chitty Bang, Bang probably proving the audience’s favourite and the Magic Carpet Ride from Harry Potter coming a close second.
