Homefield School – Dig Deep for Judo Josie
28 Apr 2016
Josie Horton, Olympian, Judo champion and our extremely popular Judo Coach, suffered a terrible accident recently, which resulted in the amputation of the lower portion of her left leg.
This is, of course, a devastating incident for Josie and she faces a difficult journey back to health. However, to nobody’s surprise given Josie’s resilient and unbreakable positive attitude, she is approaching her recovery with great optimism and is already talking about when she will be back coaching our boys.
To show our support for Josie, the school will be raising funds to help with her rehabilitation in the form of several fundraisers during the summer term.
Firstly, from the week commencing Monday 6th June, Homefield’s intrepid sports teacher, Leigh Nellthorp, will be undertaking his 20 mile journey home on foot. He will be varying the route slightly but the overall mileage for the week will be 100 miles. Leigh will be walking on footpaths and bridleways from Epsom Racecourse, via Headley Rehabilitation Centre, Denbies Vineyard, Ranmore Common, Wooton Church, Holmbury Hill and Pitch Hill to his home in Cranleigh. This is an incredibly tough challenge and we wish Leigh all the best in his endeavour.
Leigh said “Josie has recently been fitted for a prosthetic lower leg and is currently learning to walk on a temporary device. She wants to use the week I begin my challenge as a target week for her recovery, so it will be more than just financial support. Assistance and flexibility from a range of Homefield staff will assist me in my challenge. All money raised will go towards the Homefield fund which is assisting Josie in her recovery. It is by no means certain that I will complete the challenge, as I am not an experienced long distance walker! However, Josie will be in my thoughts every step of the way and I will be doing my best for her.”
In addition, the school will be selling ‘Josie’s Journey’ wristbands, which are expected to arrive with us shortly, to boost the fund, whilst the sports department will be holding a charity walk for boys of all ages throughout the school during the summer term.
The official My Donate page for ‘Josie’s Journey’ is now open for parents who would like to donate towards Judo Josie’s rehabilitation. Please donate whatever you can to help a lady who is an inspiration to all.
