12 Jun 2019

In May, Buckingham Palace was the destination for seventeen Collegians who had achieved their gold Duke of Edinburgh Award. The students were presented with their accolades at the palace in London by the Duke of Wessex, Prince Edward. In addition, current Head Boy Ryan will go on to collect his award at Holyrood House, Scotland later this year.

Prince Philip, inaugurated the youth awards programme in 1956. It entails 12 months of volunteering, physical and skills knowledge, an expedition and undertaking a shared activity in a residential setting.

Sally Groves, who co-ordinates the DofE awards at the school, said: “This is a huge achievement. It’s fantastic to have so many students achieve at school at this level. We’re proud of them, and they should be just as proud of themselves. In 2018, Hull Collegiate School became a licensed DofE organisation, and it’s wonderful to be able to provide this opportunity to our students as well as those from other schools .”

Ryan, Year 13 said: “Gold Duke of Edinburgh has been one of many great experiences I’ve had during my time at Hull Collegiate School and has brought me memories and friends that I can cherish for life. It builds on your skills beyond the classroom and gives you a greater self-belief which you can take on to your next steps, such as university and entering the workplace.”
