New Headmaster for RGS Worcester

05 Feb 2014

The Governors of RGS Worcester are pleased to announce the appointment of John Pitt as Headmaster with effect from September 2014.

Mr Pitt, who is currently Second Master of Whitgift School, will succeed Mr Andrew Rattue, who is moving on to become Head of King’s College, the British School of Madrid.

Mr Pitt was educated at Dulwich College and Pembroke College, Cambridge where he read History. He also holds a PGCE from Cambridge University. He began his teaching career at Whitgift School in Croydon and was swiftly promoted to Head of Sixth Form before becoming Academic Deputy Head at The Portsmouth Grammar School in 2003. He was invited to return to Whitgift as Second Master in 2007, a post he still occupies. Mr Pitt is married to Anna, also a teacher, and they have three young children. He has broad interests and is particularly interested in sport (notably Rugby, Hockey and Cricket) and is a qualified RYA Dinghy Instructor.

Commenting on his appointment, Mr Pitt said: “I am delighted and feel extremely privileged to have been chosen as the next Headmaster of RGS Worcester.

“As one of the country’s oldest schools, RGS Worcester has a wonderful history, an exciting present and a bright future. Andy Rattue is leaving the School in excellent shape and I have been impressed by what I have seen on my visits.  Pupils, staff, parents and Governors have all been very welcoming and are justifiably proud of their school.

“I look forward to building upon the success achieved so far in all areas including the academic and co-curricular, as well as enhancing still further the strong pastoral care and the many and varied opportunities available to the pupils. My family and I are eagerly awaiting next September and the chance to join such an excellent school.”

Whitgift School is one of the top independent day schools in the London area. It has a formidable academic reputation and has been named The Daily Telegraph Independent School of the Year for Sport for two consecutive years. Chairman of Governors Mrs Rosemary Ham said: ‘John Pitt’s superb experience in the highly competitive environment of South London and his commitment to the highest standards in all areas of school life make him the ideal candidate to build on the work of Mr Andrew Rattue and to take RGS Worcester to the next level of achievement.

“The impressive quality of the field from which Mr Pitt was selected bears witness to the high regard in which RGS is held nationally, and the Governors unanimously believe that the school will be in very safe hands.”
