New School Scholarships and Awards for 2014

Hereford Cathedral School is celebrating the start of 2014 by adding to its already impressive list of awards, scholarships and means-tested bursaries.

On top of its current Academic, Art, Music and Sports Scholarships, 2014 now witnesses this leading independent school offering a new Drama Scholarship for September 2014 entry.  The new Drama Scholarship will be available for 13+ Entry (Year 9) and 16+ Entry (Sixth Form), with scholarship days taking place from 18th January 2014 (please visit www.herefordcs.com for the exact scholarship schedule and times).

Hereford Cathedral School is also delighted to announce that due to the generosity of its former pupils, the Old Herefordians, the Trustees of the Old Herefordian Fund are seeking to sponsor a pupil of outstanding sporting ability (The Colin Manning Sports Award) and a pupil of  outstanding musical ability (The Roy Blackler Music Award), who should both currently be studying at a state maintained school and who would benefit from attending Hereford Cathedral School from Year 7 starting in September 2014.  Both Awards will be means-tested and are available up to 50% of full fees.

COLIN MANNING (OLD HEREFORDIAN) SPORTS AWARD

The Old Herefordian Trustees seek to sponsor a pupil of outstanding sporting ability who would benefit from attending Hereford Cathedral School.

The means tested award, up to 50% of full fees, will be awarded to an 11+ pupil wishing to join the School in September 2014. The successful candidate should currently be studying at a state maintained school.

The Colin Manning Award may be shared, within the total award of 50% of full fees, should more than one pupil be eligible.  The award will be subject to the successful candidate(s) taking full advantage of the sporting opportunities available, and will last until the end of Year 11, when the pupil(s) may then apply for a Sixth Form award.

Mr Colin Manning, OBE, DL, JP was a former pupil and Head boy of Hereford Cathedral School (1937-44). He was a partner in Sunderlands and a livestock auctioneer for 48 years.  He served as deputy Lieutenant of Herefordshire, and as a JP was awarded the OBE for his services to magistracy. Mr Manning was passionate about Rugby and was captain of Hereford Rugby Club for the 1950-51 season.  Mr Manning was a great supporter of the school and served for many years on the Old Herefordian Club Committee.

 

ROY BLACKLER (OLD HEREFORDIAN) MUSIC AWARD

The Old Herefordian Trustees seek to sponsor a pupil of outstanding musical ability who would benefit from attending Hereford Cathedral School.

The means tested award, up to 50% of full fees, will be awarded to an 11+ pupil wishing to join the School in September 2014. The successful candidate should currently be studying at a state maintained school

The Roy Blackler Award may be shared, within the total award of 50% of full fees, should more than one pupil be eligible.  The award will be subject to the successful candidate(s) taking full advantage of the musical opportunities available, and will last until the end of Year 11, when the pupil(s) may then apply for a Sixth Form award.

Mr Roy Blackler was a former pupil and chorister of Hereford Cathedral School (1931-37), who sang under Elgar. After serving in WW11 he became a finance officer in industry, and later became involved in local politics. He was Magistrate, Mayor of Hereford, Governor of various schools in Hereford and in 1983 was awarded Hereford’s highest honour – the freedom of the city.  Mr Blackler was a great supporter of Hereford Cathedral School, and for many years was Chairman of the Old Herefordian Trustees.
