Oswestry School’s 1st XI football team have recently competed in the City of Las Vegas Mayor’s Cup International Football Tournament.

The tour took place over half term and Oswestry School’s football squad played teams from Brazil, Tokyo, New Mexico, Kansas and Canada. The tournament is co-hosted by the City of Las Vegas and Downtown Las Vegas Soccer Club and is an opportunity for teams to play before college coaches and recruiters from around the USA on world class pitches.

Oswestry’s first fixture was against Brazilian side Next Level Academy and a 2-0 win was followed by another success the following morning against ASJ Mustangs, an American school based in Tokyo.

A 2-0 victory against the host club Downtown LVSC and a win against KS Rush 98 (Kansas) guaranteed a place in the semi-final. With a 1-1 draw in the final group match against FUSA FC Farmington (New Mexico), the team ended with a titanic struggle against CGA Academy (Idaho) and were knocked out in the semi-final.

Alun Morris, 1st XI coach said, “We are immensely proud of the boys and their achievement in such a strong international field and we look forward to returning next year and will set our sights on a trophy”.
