Oswestry School – Young golfer selected to play for U16 Wales team
27 Mar 2017
At just 13 years of age, Oswestry School 2nd Form pupil Connor Owen has been selected to play for the U16 Wales golf team in an international tournament against Scotland, Ireland and Holland this Easter at Prestatyn Golf Club.
Connor started playing golf aged 6 and almost immediately won the Welsh Mini Masters U7 age group at Celtic Manor. He joined the founding Golf Union Wales “Nursery Squad” at 9. This was the first time the GUW had thought about opportunities for players of this age and Connor was the youngest to be selected. He has been an integral member of this squad since then and currently plays with the Regional B squad (the national U15’s).
Connor is a member of Oswestry, Aberdovey and St Giles (Newtown) Golf Clubs, but plays the majority of his golf at Oswestry.
Alongside his Wales commitments Connor is heavily involved in the Shropshire and Herefordshire county team and with this group he has captained the U14’s and represented the U16’s.
Connor has recently taken part in the US Kids European Championships in Scotland where he placed 14th from 93 in the U12 age group. Building from this he then competed in the South Wales Boys U18 and Welsh Boys U18 last summer finishing just outside the top twenty in the SWB. This led to Connor qualifying for the match play stage of the Welsh Boys U18 at Pennard GC (Swansea) where he tied 19th. The highlight of the season was winning the North Wales Boys U13 & U15 Trophies at
Holywell Golf Club shooting scores of 72 and 68 gross winning the tournament by 12 shots from 2nd place.
This year Connor is looking ahead to competing in the main Welsh age group events along with taking part in the English and Scottish Boys U14 national tournaments and the US Kids European champs in Scotland in May. His season starts in earnest at the end of March with the Central Wales Boys U18 over a weekend at Borth Golf Club followed by the Midland Boys U16 Champs (held over three days) at Hawkstone Park.
