RGS Worcester athletes dominate county finals

13 Feb 2012

Athletes from RGS Worcester led the field in winning two out of the three girls’ events at the weekend’s County Finals of the Schools Cross Country competition, held at Hereford Racecourse in bitter conditions.

The two winners were Nixie Turner (13), who won the junior girls event and Jenni Nesbitt (17) in the senior girls event. Both will now represent Worcestershire in the National Finals.

The snowfall may have been a blessing in disguise as Nixie commented on her race: “The freezing conditions just made me even more determined to get to the finish line as it was far too cold to stop. The race was quite hard going and I was really surprised to find myself out in front. It felt really good to win, especially as there was a girl very close behind me at the finish.”

As well as winning both girls’ races, two more RGS Worcester pupils, Jenny Klein and Holly Wootten, have also qualified for the National Finals to be held at Ilton, Somerset on 17 March. Four further RGS athletes are on the reserve list.
