Six of the best at Christ College in County selection

06 Feb 2013

On 3rd October, six of the Christ College U15 XV played for South Powys, a Cardiff Blues Development Squad, in a hard fought match against a strong Cardiff squad.

Flanker Alex Ryan and scrum half Sion Edwards had terrific games. Alex was very prominent, putting in some outstanding tackles as well as being the catalyst for many of the S Powys attacks. Sion excelled in both attack and defence, causing the Cardiff back row real problems with his varied game and was as brave as a lion when defending. Trystan Williams was also one of the stand out backs on the S Powys team, putting in some try-saving tackles against much bigger opponents.

In the 2nd half, prop Sam Sadler came on to join hooker Sam Maggs and fellow prop Pablo Peralta to form an all Christ College front row. The unit performed exceptionally well against bigger opposition and probably shaded the scrums. Sam Sadler’s aggressive scrummaging was a real feature whist newcomer to Christ College Pablo had a terrific game and set up a S Powys try with a barnstorming run which saw him being brought down just short of the Cardiff line.

Hooker Sam Maggs, who has been appointed captain of the S Powys side, led by example. He tackled strongly, was prominent in the loose, won all of his scrums which at times were under real pressure and secured a lot of possession at the breakdown.

Cardiff arrived at Brecon RFC with a large squad, both physically and numerically, and have had the benefit of twice weekly training sessions as a unit. Their cohesiveness showed as they ran in a brace if tries in the first 10 minutes, catching the S Powys team cold. S Powys regrouped and began mounting some sustained attacks but Cardiff, on the back foot, responded with two terrific breakaway tries and went in at half time with a 22-0 lead.

Changes at half time made a positive difference to the S Powys team and arguably they dominated the 2nd half with Brecon RFC’s Daf Jones scoring a terrific try after excellent work by Christ College’s Pablo Peralta and Trystan Williams. Sadly for S Powys, their sustained pressure in the 2nd half didn’t result in additional scores but they did not concede any point either, going down 22-5.

The future looks bright for the Christ College U15s XV who now form the core of the S Powys team.
