St Swithun’s mathematics department hosted a Team Mathematics Challenge event last week. The all-day event, which is initiated by the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust, encompassed 27 teams of four in Years 8 and 9 from schools across the South. The teams competed over four rounds (Group, Shuttle, Crossnumber and Relay) of challenging but fun mathematical problems.

Head of mathematics at St Swithun’s Mr Stephen Power said “As hosts of this event, it was fantastic to see teams from schools from across the South enjoying a whole day of mathematical activities.  The concentration and enthusiasm for tackling challenging mathematical problems on the part of all the students involved was inspiring. As head of mathematics at St Swithun’s, I was particularly pleased by the performance of our team – runners-up out of a field of 27 teams was an excellent result.”
