St Swithun’s School pupils win first and second place in the Winchester and Portsmouth Cranmer awards prayer reading competition

Five girls from St Swithun’s School, Winchester competed in the Winchester and Portsmouth Cranmer awards, a prayer reading competition at the Bishop’s residence in Winchester on 7th November.

Three of the girls were awarded prizes, with St Swithun’s winning both first and second place in the senior category (15-18) and also first place in the junior category (11-15).

Ayomide Cole, Year 7, Agnes Liddell and Lyn Lee (both Year 10), Nonye Nwuke, Year 12 and Teninla Owolabi, Year 13, all read a passage of between 3-5 minutes from the Book of Common Prayer.

Public Speaking co-ordinator at the Winchester school Sally Walmsley said “The girls read beautifully and eloquently, deftly displaying the confident public speaking skills for which St Swithun’s girls are known.”

Last year St Swithun’s girls won the local heat of the English Speaking Union Public Speaking Competition. St Swithun’s co-curricular debating clubs are also going from strength to strength, with approximately 50 girls (from years 7 to 13) participating in debating on a weekly basis.
