Trinity Sixth Formers win Regional Round of UK Space Design Competition

18 Jan 2016

It isn’t every day you get a message sent in 2065 announcing the planned development of an interplanetary spaceport! So it was with some anticipation that a team of 11 Trinity Sixth Formers responded to the challenge and entered for their area heat of the UK Space Design Competition organized by Imperial College.

The students spent a very busy Saturday at City of London Academy putting together and then delivering their design proposal, shaped to meet a range of stringent criteria announced only on the day. In spite of rising standards year on year, Trinity’s ‘Vela’ proposal, complete with counter-rotating tori, hi-tech wrist-watches with security and communication functions, a multi-functioned robot army, aeroponic food production and pink noise, was judged strongest on the day. It means that for the fourth year in a row a Trinity team progresses to the UK National Final. They will join 200 other students from across the country at Imperial College over a weekend in March, competing for the prize of a trip to Florida to compete in the international contest next summer.

Trinity Head of Physics, Bill Tucker said: “I am delighted that Trinity is through to the final. The students worked incredibly well as a team and then delivered a very persuasive presentation. I am very proud of them.”
