World Class High Performance Learning Achievement

18 Jul 2025

We are proud to share the exciting news that the college has achieved again recognition as a World Class High Performance Learning (HPL) School. Following a rigorous reassessment process, we have secured this prestigious status for a further three years, reaffirming our unwavering commitment to academic excellence and innovation in teaching.

A Celebration of Outstanding Teaching and Learning

The review praised the College for its deep-rooted focus on pedagogy and the intelligent application of HPL principles across the curriculum. Our Teaching and Learning Toolkit and Department Learner Profiles were described as exemplary, having a meaningful impact on the way pupils learn and succeed. These documents reflect the high standards we set for classroom practice, ensuring every learner is stretched, supported, and inspired.

Our use of evidence-informed strategies, such as the WalkThru approach to refining classroom teaching, was singled out as particularly effective. The assessor also recognised the thriving culture of professional learning at the College, where staff engage thoughtfully with research and collaborate to continually enhance their practice.

A School Where High Performance Is a Way of Life

Pupils impressed with their confidence, curiosity, and appreciation for the support they receive. The review highlighted their strong sense of community, respectful relationships, and their ability to link classroom learning to real-world ambitions. The careers programme was cited as a standout feature, helping pupils to understand how developing skills such as collaboration and resilience will benefit them far beyond the school gates.

Staff were praised for their encouragement and belief in each pupil’s potential. One student remarked, “School helps us to do better,” while another noted, “Teachers check that we really understand and are on the ball.” These insights speak volumes about the learning culture we are proud to adopt.

Kirsten Parker, Deputy Head (Academic), added:

“We continue to work hard to ensure that each child at St Lawrence has an excellent learning experience, packed with opportunities to excel. Colleagues share the belief that potential is limitless and that all of us, staff and pupils alike, have the ability to grow and learn. We describe this as having a growth mindset, and are very proud to have had our approach and recognised again through this re-accreditation process.”

A Community of Warmth, Ambition and Respect

During the visit, the assessor observed numerous examples of our strong school ethos in action. In assembly, the Head of College celebrated a pupil’s sporting achievement before revealing a similar honour awarded to a teacher 45 years earlier. The spontaneous applause from pupils was a touching moment that captured the mutual respect shared between staff and students.

Across the school, from boarding houses to co-curricular activities, students described how older students support younger ones and how events such as house drama, singing and cultural celebrations bring the community together. These experiences build confidence, leadership, and empathy which are traits we value highly.

Leading the Way in Education

The report praised St Lawrence College as “an exceptional school that others can look to for inspiration.” Our designation as an HPL Research School in 2024, and our work with Canterbury Christ Church University, reflect our determination to remain at the forefront of educational development.

Initiatives such as ‘drop-down’ learning days, external essay competitions in the Sixth Form, and focused induction sessions for both new pupils and staff, all serve to embed a culture of aspiration and reflection. Every subject area contributes to the wider picture, reinforcing the relevance of the ACPs (Advanced Cognitive Performance Characteristics) and VAAs (Values, Attitudes and Attributes) in all aspects of school life.

Looking Ahead

Retaining World Class status is a significant achievement, yet we know that excellence is a journey, not a destination. As a member of the HPL Global Community of Schools, we remain committed to evolving our practice, sharing innovation, and helping every learner become the best version of themselves.

We look forward to celebrating this milestone at the HPL Annual Conference in 2026, and continuing to shape an education that is not only high-performing, but truly remarkable.
